Healthy sex life improves self-esteem, combat insomnia - Neuro-psychiatrist

The influence of sexual activity on mental health can yield both positive and negative outcomes, contingent upon various factors, as articulated by Dr. Maymunah Kadiri, a Consultant Neuro-psychiatrist, during a recent discussion with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. Dr. Kadiri also underscored the potential benefits of a fulfilling sexual life in enhancing mental well-being, coinciding with the observance of World Sexual Health Day (WSHD) on September 4th, an annual event dedicated to championing the right to sexual well-being for all.

Dr. Kadiri emphasized that a healthy and gratifying sexual life, characterized by consensual and respectful encounters, can contribute significantly to mental well-being by fostering emotional intimacy and bolstering self-esteem. She elucidated that engaging in consensual and gratifying sexual activities releases endorphins, the body's natural mood-enhancing compounds, which help alleviate stress and anxiety, facilitate relaxation, and promote overall emotional well-being.

Furthermore, Dr. Kadiri emphasized that sexual health is an integral facet of overall well-being, profoundly impacting an individual's mental and emotional state. She elucidated, "Sexual activity can trigger the release of endorphins, which function as natural pain relievers. This can be especially advantageous for individuals grappling with chronic pain conditions that affect their mental health. Routine sexual activity may serve as a form of stress relief, reducing the levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and fostering relaxation, thereby positively impacting mental health. For many individuals, sexual intimacy can lead to enhanced sleep quality, as the release of oxytocin and post-coital relaxation can alleviate insomnia and promote improved mental health through better rest."

However, Dr. Kadiri also noted that cultural, societal, and personal factors, including values and beliefs, can shape how individuals perceive and engage in sexual experiences, thereby influencing their mental health. She underscored that negative experiences, sexual trauma, or relationship challenges can exert adverse effects on mental health. Consequently, she advised the importance of cultivating open communication about sexual health within relationships and seeking professional assistance when necessary to address any issues that may jeopardize mental well-being.
