Why are the young people of this generation having less sex?

The current generation is experiencing a shift away from engaging in sexual activity. According to the 2021 General Social Survey, over 25% of Americans did not participate in sexual intercourse in the past year. This number was nearly 50% in the 1990s, while just under 40% of Americans reported having sex at least once a week. Although there is no available data for Nigeria, it is likely that the statistics are similar.

What are the factors contributing to this trend?

Increased work demands and emotional distress among young people. Compared to previous generations, today's young individuals face higher workloads, social isolation, financial instability, and feelings of loneliness. These factors often lead to a decrease in libido, making them less inclined to pursue sexual encounters.

The lack of enthusiasm for life diminishes sexual drive. With the global cost of living crisis, young people are burdened with stress about their future. Consequently, the challenges of life in 2023 make it difficult for them to prioritize sexual thoughts.

Unrealistic expectations from social media and pornography. The present generation of young adults has grown up in an era saturated with social media, fostering an environment of comparison and heightened expectations.

Various online platforms constantly expose individuals to depictions of "ideal" bodies, genital appearances, sexual positions, and activities. Unlike in the past, nudity and sexual content are now widely accessible. This overexposure leads to feelings of self-consciousness and dissatisfaction with one's own body and sexual experiences. Men may feel pressure to have unrealistic expectations of women, such as expecting them to "squirt," while women may expect men to possess exceptionally large penises. Consequently, these unrealistic expectations often result in disappointing sexual encounters.

Promoting healthy sexual relationships and experiences: To address the decline in sexual content and promote healthier attitudes towards sex, it is important to consider the following:

  1. Comprehensive sex education: Implement comprehensive sex education programs that provide accurate information about sexual health, consent, and communication. This will help individuals develop realistic expectations and foster positive attitudes towards sex.

  2. Open dialogue: Encourage open conversations about sex, relationships, and body image. Create safe spaces where individuals can discuss their concerns, questions, and experiences without judgment.

  3. Media literacy: Promote media literacy skills to help young people critically evaluate and analyze sexual content they encounter online. This will enable them to distinguish between fantasy and reality and develop a healthy perspective on their own bodies and sexual experiences.

  4. Emphasize emotional connection: Encourage individuals to prioritize emotional connection and intimacy in their sexual relationships, rather than solely focusing on physical aspects. This can lead to more fulfilling and satisfying experiences.

  5. Support mental health: Address the emotional distress and mental health issues that young people may face. Provide resources and support for managing stress, anxiety, and depression, as these factors can significantly impact sexual desire and engagement.

By adopting these approaches, we can work towards fostering a healthier and more balanced approach to sexual content and experiences, ensuring that individuals can navigate their sexual lives with confidence, respect, and satisfaction.
