Fully Funded Youth Leadership Forum in Iceland to Tackle Climate Challenges
Applications are now open for the Youth Leadership Forum in Iceland 2025, a fully funded program designed to empower young leaders from the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) and Arctic regions to address pressing climate issues. The forum, a collaborative initiative between ICIMOD and Arctic Circle, offers a unique opportunity for participants to engage in virtual learning and attend an in-person event in Reykjavik, Iceland, in October 2025.
The selected cohort of 12 youth leaders will participate in a year-long fellowship, engaging in monthly online meetings, webinars, and workshops. The program aims to enhance their leadership skills, foster cross-regional collaboration, and provide a platform to share their perspectives on climate change solutions. All expenses related to the in-person event, including travel, accommodation, and participation costs, will be fully covered.
Program Overview and Objectives
The HKH–Arctic Youth Leadership Forum seeks to bridge the gap between these two critical regions facing similar climate-related challenges. Participants will learn valuable skills and knowledge, represent their region in various forums, and organize local, regional, and global campaigns focused on climate action. The program emphasizes cross-regional collaboration, enabling participants to share experiences and develop solutions to common challenges.
According to Dr. Astrid Ogilvie, a climate change researcher specializing in Arctic regions, "This forum represents a crucial step in fostering global collaboration among young leaders. By connecting youth from the HKH and Arctic regions, the program facilitates the exchange of knowledge and innovative solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced by these vulnerable areas."
Historical Context and Current Relevance
The establishment of the Youth Leadership Forum reflects a growing recognition of the importance of youth engagement in addressing climate change. Historically, youth voices have often been marginalized in climate policy discussions. However, recent years have witnessed a surge in youth activism and advocacy, highlighting the need for platforms that amplify their perspectives and empower them to take action.
Scholarships promoting youth engagement in global issues have become increasingly common, reflecting a broader trend of investing in future leaders. Government scholarships, fully funded fellowships, and exchange programs are now widely available, offering young people opportunities to develop their skills and contribute to solving global challenges.
