Sierra Leone Ambassador to Russia Strengthens Diplomatic Ties with Kazakhstan Ambassador in Moscow

On the 7th of September 2023, Mohamed Yongawo, the Sierra Leonean Ambassador to Russia, visited His Excellency Dauren Abaev at the Kazakhstan Embassy in Moscow. This visit was intended to convey the warm regards of President Julius Maada Bio to his counterpart, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and the people of Kazakhstan.

During the meeting, Ambassador Yongawo expressed his appreciation for the former Kazakhstan Ambassador to Russia, referring to him as a 'valued friend' for his assistance in facilitating the presentation of his credentials to President Tokayev in Kazakhstan. He mentioned that during this event in Almaty, he had productive discussions with the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry and the Minister of Education.

Ambassador Yongawo also highlighted the enduring bilateral relationship between Kazakhstan and Sierra Leone, noting the shared similarities between the two nations, ranging from cultural diversity to regal heritage.

Moreover, Ambassador Yongawo discussed President Bio's Five Priority Areas, suggesting that Kazakhstan might be interested in collaborating on one of these key areas, specifically the "Feed Salone" agricultural sector, given Kazakhstan's technical and technological expertise in the field.

In addition, Ambassador Yongawo advocated for cooperation in establishing visa waivers for holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports from both countries. This initiative would facilitate easier movement and strengthen bilateral relations while promoting increased trade between the two nations.

Furthermore, Ambassador Yongawo raised concerns about the well-being of Sierra Leonean citizens residing in Kazakhstan, some of whom may be facing immigration status challenges. He requested understanding and support for these individuals.

In response, Ambassador Dauren Abaev expressed gratitude for the visit, emphasizing the longstanding relations between Sierra Leone and Kazakhstan. He noted the shared characteristics between the two countries, such as a significant Muslim population and cultural diversity. Ambassador Abaev expressed his desire for visa-free movement between the nations, starting with Diplomatic and Service Passport holders, with the intention to eventually extend this privilege to all citizens.

After the meeting, Ambassador Mohamed Yongawo was accompanied by First Secretary Madam Wulaimatu Conteh, Interpreter Mrs. Malika Makhkamova, and Information Attaché Mr. Festus J. Lahai.
