22-Year-Old Lady in Jail For Alleged Cyber Crime

A 22-year-old woman, Safiatu Sesay, found herself in legal proceedings before Magistrate Marke Ngegba at Pademba Road Court No.1 in Freetown on the 12th of September 2023. The charges brought against her pertain to alleged involvement in cybercrime.

During the open court session, Magistrate Ngegba emphasized the seriousness of cybercrime-related offenses, underscoring the need for their proper consideration.

The court heard allegations that between June 4th and August 3rd, 2023, the accused, Safiatu Sesay, residing in Freetown, had transmitted highly offensive messages via the social media platform Facebook, under the account name 'Sia Rose,' directed at Major Amadu Ahmed Kargbo.

The accused stands charged with a single count of cyberbullying, a violation of Section 44 (2) (b) of the Cyber Crime Act 2021.

In the courtroom, the complainant is being represented by police prosecutor Inspector Sellu Tap, whereas the accused lacks legal representation. In the interim, Magistrate Mark Ngegba has ordered the remand of the accused and scheduled a subsequent hearing for September 15th, 2023, during which the complainant will provide testimony.
