Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency Warns of Heavy Rains and Flooding This Year, Urges Proactive Measures to be Taken

The Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet) has issued a warning that heavy rainfall is expected this year, which could lead to flooding. Gabriel Kpaka, the Director of SLMet, has urged the authorities to take proactive measures, such as cleaning clogged gutters in major cities, to prevent urban flooding.

The agency has advised locals to avoid living in flood-prone areas and to maintain dams, roads, and clean sewer channels to reduce the risk of flooding. SLMet has also predicted low rainfall this year, particularly in June, July, and August.

The agency's data, which was taken from ocean surface data between 1992 and 2022, indicates a late onset of rain across the country, with only the Northeastern District of Koinadugu experiencing some dry spells.

Kpaka has clarified that the rainfall deficit will be from the overall rainfall and not the number of rainy days. This may cause a delay in the planting season for farmers, who will have to wait for at least 10 days before starting their planting season in the country.
