Sierra Leone’s Election Draws Close Scrutiny from United States

US Embassy in Freetown to Monitor Sierra Leone's Upcoming Multi-Tier Election

Sierra Leone's upcoming multi-tier election in June has caught the attention of the United States, according to a statement released by the US Embassy in Freetown. The embassy has revealed that the US Government will be sending professional staff members from the US Senate Foreign Relations to monitor the election.

In a meeting between the US Ambassador and the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone, they had a thorough discussion on the election, which the US government will watch with great interest, the embassy said.

Sierra Leone's election is scheduled for June 24, 2023, with incumbent SLPP Julius Maada Bio contesting against main opposition APC Dr. Samura Kamara for the second time. Bio won by a narrow margin in 2018 after a runoff. The outcome of the election is expected to have implications for the region and beyond, hence the US interest.
