Sierra Leone's President, Julius Maada Bio Convenes Final Cabinet Meeting Ahead of 2023 Elections
As part of Sierra Leone's good governance structure leading up to the June 24, 2023 elections, the cabinet of President Julius Maada Bio has held its final meeting. However, ahead of the election, some locals have criticized Bio's administration, particularly regarding the economy, as the local currency continues to depreciate against foreign currencies. While Bio's supporters blame the war in Ukraine for the economic difficulties, they also highlight the development of electricity in the country's provincial towns and rural areas.
Sierra Leone will hold a multi-tier election in June, with the main competition between incumbent Maada Bio and opposition candidate Dr. Samura Kamara of the All People's Congress. The two candidates previously faced each other in 2018, with Bio winning by a narrow margin. Despite both candidates expressing confidence in their ability to win the election without a runoff, the outcome remains to be seen.
