Guehi Reveals WWE Ambition Amidst Rising Stock at Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has revealed a surprising ambition to become a WWE wrestler, alongside discussing his career trajectory and personal life in a new BBC Sport interview. The 25-year-old, a mainstay in the Palace defence since his arrival in 2021, also addressed speculation surrounding his future, with Liverpool reportedly among his admirers.

Guehi's candid interview with Kelly Somers provides insight into the man behind the player, exploring his motivations, defining moments, and personal reflections. The interview is part of a new BBC Sport series, "The Football Interview," available on iPlayer, BBC Sounds, and the BBC Sport website, and broadcast on BBC One after Match of the Day.

From Cray Wanderers to Premier League Star

Guehi reminisced about his early footballing memories, recalling playing in the park with friends and his time with Sunday League team Cray Wanderers. He acknowledged the talented players he played alongside in his youth, including some who were part of academy systems at Arsenal and Chelsea.

"Everyone's lives go different ways for whatever reason," Guehi stated, reflecting on why he reached the professional level while others did not. "They could be doing amazing things right now. I'm just fortunate I am in this position today."

Swansea Loan: A Turning Point

A pivotal moment in Guehi's career was his loan spell at Swansea City. "Coming from Chelsea's academy and going to such an amazing club that made me feel welcome from the beginning... not playing right away, having to sit on the bench... that definitely helped me understand the world of football a bit better." He credited senior players Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer for guiding him during that period.

Speaking to BBC Sport, football analyst Alan Shearer highlighted the importance of loan spells for young players. "The Championship is a tough league, physically and mentally. Guehi's experience at Swansea will have been invaluable in preparing him for the demands of the Premier League. It's often the making of a player."

Family Foundation and WWE Dreams

Guehi emphasized the importance of his family, particularly his parents, in his success. He also spoke about his close relationship with his sisters, with whom he still lives. "Home is my sisters. Everyone is just funny. I get to be myself in a way... they are my foundation."

In a surprising revelation, Guehi expressed his desire to become a WWE wrestler. "I'd love to be a WWE wrestler. Growing up, watching WWE... the performance side of it… I'm a good waffler on the mic... making people believe you're the bad guy or the good guy."

Future Ambitions

When asked about his proudest achievement, Guehi focused on his perseverance and self-driven improvement. "Just the fact I have kept going... the pressure I put on myself. I'm quite demanding. The fact that I have almost in a way battled it out with myself and I have kept going is a good thing."

His ultimate career goal is to play until he is 40. "Obviously winning trophies is great and playing in different competitions, but I think that is real testament to how professional someone is."

Former England international Rio Ferdinand, speaking on his podcast, praised Guehi's maturity and ambition. "He's a grounded individual with a clear focus. To want to play until 40 shows incredible dedication. He's definitely one to watch for the future, both for Crystal Palace and England."

Transfer Speculation

While Guehi didn't directly address the transfer rumors linking him with Liverpool, his impressive performances have undoubtedly attracted attention. His leadership qualities, demonstrated by captaining Crystal Palace to their first major trophy – the FA Cup – have further enhanced his reputation.

Guehi's current contract with Crystal Palace runs until 2026, giving the club some leverage in any potential negotiations. However, a significant offer from a Champions League club could prove difficult to resist.
