Augusta James Teima, Sierra Leone's inaugural female Minister of Sports, paid an unexpected visit to the Leone Stars' training camp at Wusum Field on Saturday, September 2, 2023, along with her Deputy Minister, Kai Lawrence Mbayo. This visit coincided with the Leone Stars' intensive preparations for their crucial Group A match in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau.
Minister Teima, who assumed office only fifty-one days ago after President Bio's triumph in the June 24th, 2023 elections, emphasized the significance of securing a victory in the forthcoming match. While Sierra Leone won't participate in the 2023 AFCON in Cote d'Ivoire, triumphing over Guinea-Bissau would not only enhance the country's FIFA/CAF Ranking but also invigorate the team's spirit for the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in November, where they are scheduled to confront Ethiopia and Egypt.
"Sports remains a top priority in President Bio's administration," declared Minister Teima during her address to the Leone Stars. "I urge you to continue your dedicated efforts and deliver a triumph for our nation against Guinea-Bissau."
During their visit, the Minister and her delegation had the privilege of witnessing the first half of a friendly match in which the Leone Stars secured a 4-1 victory over the Western Area All-Stars.
Currently, Sierra Leone holds 3rd place in Group A of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, with 5 points garnered from five matches played.
The Leone Stars are gearing up to face Guinea-Bissau on September 11, 2023, in a pivotal match following a 2-2 draw in their initial encounter last year. This visit by the Minister of Sports underscores the government's unwavering commitment to bolstering various sporting disciplines. It aims to inspire the national team to attain excellence on the global stage.
