Minister Chernor Bah, responsible for Information and Civic Education, conducted a surprise visit to the transmitting facilities situated on Leicester Peak, which are under the ownership of Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC). The purpose of this impromptu visit was to personally assess the ongoing operations at this location.
Accompanying Minister Bah were Deputy Minister Yusuf Keketoma Sandi and other high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Information and Civic Education.
The unannounced visit aimed to perform an immediate inspection of SLBC's facilities, as well as gain insights into the activities conducted at the Leicester Peak site. It sought to evaluate the functioning of the SLBC transmitting and communication relay station, in addition to understanding the operations of other entities co-located on this site.
Although SLBC owns the site, it has portions leased to other broadcasting stations and operators of communication systems, such as mobile telephone companies, internet service providers (ISPs), and the state-owned Sierratel.
Upon arrival at the location, Minister Bah conducted a comprehensive tour of all SLBC facilities and the operations of other entities sharing the site, including those co-located within SLBC's premises. He engaged with the site's workers and engineers to gain a thorough understanding of their operations and procedures.
During his visit, Minister Bah expressed his commitment to reviewing existing contracts to ensure that the government can derive meaningful benefits from these facilities.Concluding the tour, Minister Bah assured the on-site workers that he would engage with various stakeholders to enhance their working conditions, particularly regarding their exposure to radiation. He emphasized that the safety and well-being of workers were of utmost importance under his leadership.
