Following the multi-tier elections in Sierra Leone on June 24th, the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) convened a significant discussion to evaluate the election outcomes and deliberate on various human rights initiatives. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) provided support for this endeavor, enabling the HRCSL to engage in proactive talks and prioritize activities for the upcoming 75th anniversary of the universal declaration of human rights.
During the meeting, the HRCSL and attending stakeholders focused on strategies to ensure active participation and engagement in the momentous 75th-anniversary celebration of the universal declaration of human rights. The collaboration with the UNDP proved crucial in fostering a meaningful exchange of ideas on this vital matter.
In addition to this, the HRCSL worked together with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Restless Development to address another pressing issue – advocating for a national strategy aimed at reducing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Sierra Leone. In pursuit of this objective, the stakeholders emphasized the significance of raising the minimum age of consent to 18 years, thereby seeking to protect the rights and well-being of young women in the country.
