Mrs. Matilda Doris Sellu, the President of the Sierra Leone Police Wives Association, and her team of executives have launched a nationwide non-violence campaign across all sixteen districts of the country. The main objective of this campaign is to address the frequent incidents of violent activities that have affected police personnel and their relatives, including the recent August 10 insurrection in Freetown and other parts of the country.
As the national elections are approaching on June 24th, 2023, the issue of political violence and other related anti-social problems has become a significant concern. In response to this, Mrs. Matilda Doris Sellu, in partnership with the Community Relations Department, has taken the initiative to spread messages of peace and non-violence throughout the country.
The campaign kickstarted in Masiaka, where Mrs. Sellu was warmly received by the Paramount Chief Kompa Mboboli II of Koya Chiefdom. She and her team addressed a massive crowd of young people, appealing to them to participate in the forthcoming elections peacefully and without resorting to violence.
From there, the team proceeded to Port Loko, Kambia, and Lunsar divisions, where they received a positive response from the Chiefdom Speaker of Gbakeloko Chiefdom, Makepay Tarawallie, Paramount Chief Koblo Queen of Parampa Chiefdom in Lunsar, and others. These chiefs praised Mrs. Sellu's efforts and promised to disseminate the message of non-violence to their subjects, emphasizing that the election process should be a friendly competition rather than a violent battle.
To engage and entertain the public, the non-violence messages were accompanied by a peace skit and a musical concert. Mrs. Matilda Doris Sellu and her team believe that such campaigns can go a long way in reducing the level of violence and ensuring peaceful elections. They are committed to continuing this initiative and spreading the message of non-violence to all corners of the country.
