Deadly floods in Congo.

Last week, one of the deadliest disasters in recent history struck the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where flash floods killed over 400 people. Recovery efforts are ongoing in the villages of Bushushu and Nyamukubi in South Kivu province, where survivors are mourning the loss of multiple family members and thousands have been displaced. Mud-caked bodies continue to be recovered by humanitarian workers, and the large number of casualties has necessitated mass graves. Videos posted online show workers burying victims in these graves.

The toll is expected to rise as bodies are still being found in rivers and under debris, and hundreds of people remain unaccounted for. The government has declared a national day of mourning, and flags are flying at half-staff in memory of the victims.
