In the late hours of Saturday, April 8, 2023, ASP Mathew Moiwah Gbanya, also known as "Boyka," the Regional Coordinator of the Operational Support Division in the North-East Regional headquarters town of Makeni, was shot and killed, according to an eyewitness account.
On social media, an audio recording features an eyewitness account stating that ASP Gbanya was pursuing an Okada rider who had committed a traffic violation and fled. As the officer chased the rider, a black vehicle approached him at Clocktower Station Road. The witness claims that the individuals in the car got out, fired three rounds at ASP Gbanya, and then fled the scene.
However, conflicting reports suggest that ASP Gnanya was not on duty but rather out shopping for items since his family had joined him in Makeni for the Easter holiday. According to these sources, the vehicle was stationary, and the officer was sitting in the driver's seat when he was shot in the neck by unknown assailants.
