An eyewitness has given a harrowing account of the shooting of ASP Mathew Moiwah Gbanya, also known as "Boyka," in Makeni, Sierra Leone. The police officer was shot dead by an unknown assailant on Saturday, 8th April 2023.
According to the eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the incident happened around 7 pm in the evening. He said he was on his way home from work when he saw a man walking towards ASP Gbanya, who was standing by his vehicle.
"All of a sudden, the man brought out a gun and shot ASP Gbanya three times. He then fled the scene on foot, while people were running for their lives," the eyewitness said.
He added that he immediately called the police emergency number and reported the incident. The police arrived on the scene shortly after and took the body of ASP Gbanya to the hospital.
The eyewitness also said that the incident has left the community in shock and fear, as no one knows who the killer is or why he targeted the police officer.
The killing of ASP Gbanya has been condemned by various organizations, including the Campaign for Good Governance, which has called on the police to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice.
