A top court official criticized the government for banning vehicles during the 2023 elections.

The Master and Registrar of the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone, Lansana Kortor Kamara, has confirmed that the ban on vehicular movement during Election Day is illegal and unconstitutional.

Mr. Kamara made this statement to members of the Multi Stakeholders Election Steering Committee after Civil Society Organizations raised the question of vehicular movement on election day.

He continued by stating that if the Office of National Security (ONS) wants to make a decision on whether to ban vehicular movement on Election Day, they will have to look into the Supreme Court ruling.

He disclosed that the matter of banning vehicular movement on Election Day was taken to the Supreme Court by Lawyer Sorie Sengbeh Marah in 2019 for interpretation, and that it involved Lawyer Sorie Sengbeh Marah, the Inspector General of Police, and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

In response to Mr. Kamara's statement, the National Security Coordinator of ONS, Abdulai Coker, stated that they will review the matter and later inform the General Master and Registrar of the Supreme Court, as well as the public, of their decision.
