Son to leave Tottenham this summer after 10 years
Son Heung-min to Depart Tottenham After a Decade of Service
Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has announced he will leave the club this summer, bringing an end to his ten-year spell in North London. The South Korean international, who joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, confirmed the news on Thursday, August 2nd, 2025, stating it was "the most difficult decision" of his career.
The 33-year-old leaves having etched his name into Tottenham folklore, scoring 173 goals in 454 appearances. His crowning achievement as captain came in May, when he led Spurs to victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final, ending the club's 17-year trophy drought.
A Decade of Dedication Ends
“I came to north London as a kid - a very young age, a young boy came to London who even didn't speak English,” Son stated during a press conference alongside newly appointed manager Thomas Frank. “Leaving this club as a grown man is a very, very proud moment.”
Son's contract with Tottenham runs until 2026, but speculation has been rife linking him with a move to Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC. While his next destination remains unconfirmed, his departure marks the end of an era for Spurs, who will need to find a way to replace his goals, leadership, and undeniable connection with the fans.
Potential Farewell in Seoul
Tottenham are currently in Seoul for their pre-season preparations, with Son expected to feature and captain the side against Newcastle in a friendly on Sunday. This could potentially be his final appearance for the club, allowing him to bid farewell to the Spurs faithful in his home country.
Thomas Frank, who took over as head coach from Ange Postecoglou in June, lauded Son as “a true Spurs legend” and “one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League.” He added, “If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it here in front of his home fans. It could be a beautiful ending.”
The Legacy of Son Heung-min
Son’s impact on Tottenham extends beyond his goalscoring record. His infectious enthusiasm, relentless work ethic, and unwavering commitment to the club have made him a fan favourite and a role model for aspiring footballers in South Korea and beyond.
"Son Heung-min's departure represents a significant loss, not just in terms of goals, but also in terms of leadership and marketability," says football finance expert Dr. Dan Plumley from Sheffield Hallam University. "His presence has been crucial in expanding Tottenham's brand in Asia, and replacing that will be a difficult task."
Uncertain Future for Spurs
Tottenham are also scheduled to face Paris St-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on August 13th, but it is unclear whether Son will still be with the club by then. The club's hierarchy will now be focused on identifying potential replacements and ensuring the transition period is as smooth as possible.
“The challenge for Tottenham now is to build a new attacking identity,” notes former Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas. “Son’s goals and assists have been vital for so long. Frank needs to find a way to redistribute that attacking burden and ensure the team remains competitive.”
Son's departure marks a turning point for Tottenham. As they embark on a new chapter under Thomas Frank, they will need to find a way to fill the void left by a player who has become synonymous with the club's recent history.
