HKBU International Writers Workshop 2026 in Hong Kong | Fully Funded
Fully Funded HKBU International Writers' Workshop 2026 Opens Applications Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is now accepting applications for its prestigious International Writers' Workshop (IWW), scheduled to take place from March 2-29, 2026, in Hong Kong. This fully funded program offers writers a unique opportunity for professional development and cross-cultural exchange in a vibrant academic environment.
Comprehensive Support for International Writers The HKBU IWW provides comprehensive financial support to selected participants, including round-trip airfare, accommodation for the duration of the workshop, and a daily allowance to cover living expenses. This allows writers to focus entirely on their craft and engage fully in the workshop's activities without financial burden.
A Month-Long Residency in Hong Kong The four-week Writers-in-Residence Program is designed to foster creativity and collaboration. Participants will be immersed in the HKBU campus environment, interacting with fellow writers from diverse backgrounds and engaging in literary activities. The program aims to provide a supportive and stimulating environment for writers to advance their work.
Program Highlights and Activities The IWW program includes a variety of activities designed to enhance the writers' experience. The first week features a Welcome Ceremony, providing an opportunity for participants to meet each other and learn more about the program's structure and objectives. The final week culminates in a Literary Festival, where writers can share their work and engage with the broader literary community. The theme for the 2026 Literary Festival is "Here and There," encouraging writers to explore themes of place, displacement, and cultural identity in their work.
Expert Perspective: The Value of International Writing Programs "International writing programs like the HKBU IWW play a crucial role in fostering global literary exchange," says Dr. Emily Carter, Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley. "They provide writers with invaluable opportunities to connect with peers from different cultures, broaden their perspectives, and develop their craft in a supportive and stimulating environment. The financial support offered by fully funded programs is particularly important, as it removes barriers to participation for writers from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds."
Historical Context: The Growth of Writer Residencies The concept of writer residencies has a long and rich history, dating back to the early 20th century. These programs have evolved significantly over time, from small, informal gatherings to highly structured and competitive programs offered by universities, arts organizations, and private foundations. The HKBU IWW represents a modern iteration of this tradition, reflecting a growing emphasis on international collaboration and cultural exchange in the literary arts.

"Applicants should ensure that their application materials are of the highest quality, showcasing their best work and clearly articulating their goals for the residency. A strong Artist's Statement is particularly important, as it provides an opportunity to demonstrate their vision and connect with the selection committee."
