The Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, Austria, is now accepting applications for the Digital Humanism Fellowship for the 2025-2026 session. This fully funded program offers scholars a unique opportunity to conduct in-depth research on the evolving landscape of digital society. The fellowship aims to foster critical reflection on the ethical, social, and political implications of technological advancements.
Fellowship Details and Benefits
Selected fellows will receive a monthly stipend to cover essential expenses, including travel, accommodation, living costs, and health insurance. The stipend amount varies based on academic qualifications, with doctoral degree holders receiving €3,300 per month and doctoral candidates receiving €2,750 per month.
Beyond financial support, the fellowship provides a conducive research environment. Fellows will have access to office space at the IWM, complete with internet access and in-house research and administrative facilities. Complimentary in-house lunch and other services further enhance the research experience.
Program Structure and Opportunities
The Digital Humanism Fellowship program includes Senior Visiting Fellowships (by invitation only, for one month) and Junior Visiting Fellowships (open application, for three months in Spring 2026). Fellows will actively engage with the IWM's researcher community, participating in research activities, lectures, and conferences for the public in Vienna and beyond. This collaborative environment fosters intellectual exchange and promotes the dissemination of research findings.
Expert Perspective: The Importance of Digital Humanism
"Digital Humanism is not simply about using technology, but about shaping technology to serve human values," explains Dr. Anya Schmidt, a professor of Science and Technology Studies at the University of Vienna. "Fellowships like this are crucial because they provide dedicated time and resources for scholars to grapple with the complex questions arising from the increasing integration of digital technologies into our lives. We need critical analysis to ensure that technology empowers individuals and promotes societal well-being, rather than exacerbating existing inequalities or undermining democratic principles."
Eligibility Criteria
Senior Visiting Fellowships are awarded to researchers by invitation only. Junior Visiting Fellowship applicants must be either currently pursuing a doctoral degree or have completed their PhD within the last four years.

Historical and Current Context of Scholarship Funding in Austria
Austria has a long tradition of supporting academic research through various scholarships and fellowships. The Austrian Federal Ministry of Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure, in collaboration with institutions like the IWM, plays a key role in funding research that addresses societal challenges. This commitment reflects a broader European trend towards investing in research and innovation to drive economic growth and improve quality of life. However, funding for the humanities, particularly in areas like digital ethics, often faces challenges in comparison to STEM fields. Fellowships like the Digital Humanism program help to address this imbalance by providing dedicated support for critical inquiry into the societal impacts of technology.
Deadline
The application deadline for the Digital Humanism Fellowship is September 21, 2025.
