Fully Funded TOKAS International Creators Residency Program Opens Applications for 2026-2027

Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS), a program of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, is now accepting applications for its International Creators Residency Program for the 2026-2027 sessions. This fully funded residency offers visual artists, designers, filmmakers, and architects the opportunity to live and work in Tokyo for three months, fostering creative exploration and cross-cultural exchange.

Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

The TOKAS International Creators Residency Program seeks applications from artists with a strong track record and a clear vision for their proposed project. Applicants must reside outside of Japan and possess at least five years of experience in their respective creative field. A good command of English is essential for effective communication with other artists and TOKAS staff. While PhD candidates are eligible, applicants cannot be enrolled as students at the time the residency begins.

According to Kenji Tanaka, a former TOKAS resident and now a curator specializing in international exchange programs, "TOKAS is looking for artists who are not only talented but also adaptable and open to new experiences. Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must reside outside of Japan. A minimum of 5 years of experience in visual arts, design, architecture, or film is required. Proficiency in English is necessary. Applicants must be independent and capable of managing their daily life and creative work. Applicants cannot be students at the start of the residency (except for Ph.D. candidates).

Download the Application Package and Manual from the official TOKAS website. Complete Application Forms 1 and 2 in English. Obtain two signed and dated letters of recommendation from professionals or institutions in the art and culture field. Email the completed forms and letters of recommendation to apply_residency2026@tokyoartsandspace.jp with the subject line: Your Name – International Creator Residency Program 2026. After submitting the documents, TOKAS will provide a link to upload a portfolio in PDF format (maximum 6 A4 pages and 10MB).
