Jodie Comer Details the Creation of Believable Family Dynamics in '28 Years Later'

Jodie Comer, star of the highly anticipated "28 Years Later," has revealed the collaborative process she and her co-stars, Alfie Williams and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, undertook to forge an authentic family dynamic within the film's post-apocalyptic setting. The film, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, serves as a direct sequel to the 2002 horror hit "28 Days Later."

Rehearsals Key to Family Connection

Comer emphasized the importance of a two-week rehearsal period prior to filming. "We got in a rehearsal room and we had Alex Garland there and we were able to kind of do a bit of script work and just read through scenes, ask any questions that we had," Comer stated. The actors engaged in practical exercises, utilizing props and a mock bedroom set to explore the history and tactile nature of their on-screen family. "That was about us getting familiar with each other, you know, getting tactile, kind of thinking of the history that we've had as a family and just, like you say, trying to establish that because you don't see any of that on camera but you want people to believe this relationship."

Role Reversals and Protection

Comer further elaborated on the complexities of her character Isla's relationship with Spike, played by Alfie Williams. She noted a unique dynamic where Spike often assumes the role of the parent, providing support and guidance to Isla. "And I think, in my case with Isla, Spike is actually often having to play the role of parent, which was a unique dynamic, which I think was unfamiliar to the both of us. So that we had to really find that in the physicality, when you would expect the child to kind of seek refuge and support and guidance from the parent, but actually that's what, you know, Alfie's Spike was having to provide me. It was lovely to find that."

The Importance of Family in a Horror Landscape

According to film critic Sarah Jones, the focus on family dynamics is a crucial element that sets "28 Years Later" apart from typical horror fare. "While the film undoubtedly delivers on the expected thrills and scares, the emotional core of a family struggling to survive adds a layer of depth that resonates with audiences," Jones explains. "It's this human element that elevates the film beyond a simple zombie narrative."

Context: A History of Horror and Social Commentary

"28 Days Later," released in 2002, is often credited with revitalizing the zombie genre with its fast-moving infected and its stark portrayal of societal breakdown. The film also tapped into anxieties surrounding bio-terrorism and governmental response to crises, themes that remain relevant today. Its success spawned numerous sequels, homages, and imitations, solidifying its place as a landmark horror film. "28 Years Later" aims to build upon this legacy by further exploring the psychological and emotional toll of living in a world ravaged by a pandemic.

Expert Perspective: The Evolution of the Horror Genre

Dr. Emily Carter, a professor of film studies at the University of Southern California, argues that the horror genre has consistently served as a mirror reflecting societal fears and anxieties. "From the monster movies of the 1950s to the slasher films of the 1980s, horror has always been a way for us to grapple with our deepest concerns," Carter states. "The '28 Days Later' franchise, and now '28 Years Later,' uses the rage virus as a metaphor for societal collapse and the fragility of human connection in the face of overwhelming adversity."
