Government Releases Statement on IPCNC’s Post Elections Report

The Ministry of Information and Communications in Sierra Leone, acting on behalf of the government, has issued a statement regarding the findings of an independent commission focused on post-election matters. This commission, known as the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC), recently presented its findings to President Julius Maada Bio.

The government expressed its appreciation for the essential role played by the ICPNC throughout the stages leading up to, during, and after the multi-tier elections that took place on June 24 in Sierra Leone.

The statement also acknowledged the significant efforts undertaken by the ICPNC to facilitate reconciliation in the aftermath of the elections, especially in terms of facilitating discussions between the ruling SLPP-led Government and the opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC).

The government highlighted its belief in the value of leveraging established local institutions and voices to promote peaceful dialogue and national unity. This perspective was deemed crucial for the nation's democratic progress. The government welcomed the ICPNC's interactions with various political parties, including the major opposition party, the All People’s Congress, to address concerns arising after the elections. The government encouraged the ICPNC to collaborate with other reputable local and international organizations, such as the Commonwealth and regional African institutions, which have shown interest in supporting the dialogue efforts after the elections. The government assured the ICPNC of its unwavering support throughout this process.

Furthermore, the government embraced the sincere and patriotic pursuit of common ground among various political factions, particularly following the June 2023 elections. The government cited the President's address to the 6th Parliament, in which he emphasized the necessity of cohesion in politics and the paramount importance of unity and cooperation in serving the citizens. Given the absence of a two-thirds majority for any single party in the Parliament, the government stressed the urgency of dialogue and negotiation across political divides.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the government's steadfast dedication to upholding lasting peace and unity. It called upon all stakeholders, including the All People’s Congress, to heed the call for peaceful dialogue. The government sought to assure both the nation's citizens and the global community of its resolute commitment to these principles.
