"United Nations Congratulates President Bio on Re-Election and Supports Democratic Transitions in West Africa"


In a global broadcast during the ECOWAS Summit, President Bio of Sierra Leone received congratulations from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres for his successful re-election. The felicitations conveyed on behalf of the entire United Nations, were warmly acknowledged by President Bio during the live event.

H.E. Leonardo Santos Simão, the Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, delivered the message from Secretary-General Guterres and expressed gratitude to the Government of Sierra Leone for the successful conduct of the multi-tier elections held on June 24th.

President Bio expressed deep appreciation for the numerous congratulatory messages and warm fraternal felicitations he received on his well-deserved re-election. He also took the opportunity to extend his formal congratulations to his brother and colleague, H.E Ahmed Bola Tinubu, who attended his first ECOWAS Heads of State Summit as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

During the summit, President Bio reiterated his commitment to support the ECOWAS transition agenda for the restoration of democratic constitutional rule in Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali. He emphasized the importance of political governance and security within the Community.

President Bio also highlighted Sierra Leone's successful elections, describing them as free, fair, credible, and peaceful. He expressed gratitude to Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas and the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission Team for their professionalism and diligence in observing the elections.

The United Nations also extended similar congratulations to Nigerian President His Excellency Ahmed Bola Tinubu on his election earlier this year. Furthermore, the organization pledged to provide support for the upcoming presidential elections scheduled to take place in Liberia later this year, with the aim of ensuring a similarly successful outcome.
