"Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone Urges Prioritization of Peace and Unity in Post-Election Period"

The Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL) recently issued a statement urging Sierra Leoneans and foreign partners to prioritize peace and unity in the country's post-election phase. The council, which is dedicated to promoting peace, unity, and prosperity, expressed gratitude for the nation's blessings and protection, acknowledging the role of divine providence.

Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles, the President of the IRCSL, signed the statement, providing a brief historical account of the council's establishment during the height of the civil war in 1997. The statement emphasized the council's mission to find lasting solutions to the nation's challenges and reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to this cause as Sierra Leone faces new obstacles in consolidating peace and strengthening national unity.

The active engagement of the IRCSL with Election Management Bodies, national stakeholders, and international partners before, during, and after the June 24 General Elections was highlighted as significant. The council's involvement aimed to safeguard national peace and unity, reflecting its ongoing dedication to this important objective.

While acknowledging a few incidents of politically-related violence and hate speech, the IRCSL stated that the elections were generally peaceful, free, and fair. However, the council also recognized the grievances and complaints raised during the electoral process, including concerns about transparency, accountability, political victimization, and loss of life and property. These concerns are currently being discussed as the council seeks amicable solutions.

In pursuit of resolving these outstanding issues, the IRCSL has initiated dialogues with key stakeholders and appealed to the public to maintain peace, compassion, and adherence to the law. The statement stressed that the nation's commitment to peace, unity, and social cohesion is once again being tested, and it called upon citizens to uphold their spiritual beliefs and traditional values as guiding principles during this critical period.

In conclusion, the IRCSL expressed gratitude for the public's attention and offered a prayer for national blessings, reaffirming its dedication to fostering peace, unity, and prosperity for Sierra Leone.
