In a statement, Kamara stated, "The deployment of tear gas was entirely uncalled for. The police blocked our route, but I am pleased that my supporters responded peacefully, and we have now arrived at our campaign ground." Kamara went on to taunt the police for their failure to prevent his supporters from peacefully campaigning in the district.
Upon his arrival in Koidu City, Kono, on Friday, Kamara was greeted by thousands of enthusiastic supporters who lined the streets. However, videos circulated on social media shortly after his appearance, revealing some of his supporters fleeing tear gas fired by the Sierra Leone Police Paramilitary unit.
This incident follows reports that Kamara's running mate had been allegedly trapped in Kenema District, an opposition stronghold, due to an attack purportedly carried out by supporters of the ruling party.
As the country approaches the upcoming polls on June 24th, both political parties have been trading accusations of violence. In response, the police have urged both parties to report any incidents to them along with supporting evidence.
