On June 9, 2023, the government of Sierra Leone entered into a partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to initiate a South-South Cooperation project with Vietnam, with the primary objective of strengthening the rice value chain in Sierra Leone. This trilateral agreement was officially signed by His Excellency Abu Bakarr Karim, the Minister for Agriculture, Forestry, and Food Security of Sierra Leone, and Saeed Abubakar Bancie, the FAO Representative in Sierra Leone.
The signing of this South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) agreement signifies a significant step towards the development of the rice sector in Sierra Leone. The project, which is estimated to cost around $5 million, will be implemented through a Unilateral Trust Fund (UTF) provided by Sierra Leone.
The tripartite project aims to enhance the productivity and production of rice by facilitating increased access to improved technologies and the scaling up of best practices along the entire rice value chain. By supporting various stakeholders, this initiative seeks to boost the overall efficiency and output of the rice industry in Sierra Leone.
