"European Union Mission Ensures Transparency and Credibility in Sierra Leone Elections"

The upcoming elections in Sierra Leone are set to benefit from enhanced transparency and credibility with the recent actions taken by the European Union Election Observation Mission (EOM). In a press release issued over the weekend, the EU EOM made an important announcement regarding the deployment of long-term observers across all 16 districts of the country.

These long-term observers, organized into multinational teams of two, will diligently monitor and analyze various aspects of the electoral process at the regional level. Their duties include assessing election preparations, observing campaign activities, and monitoring the conduct of electoral stakeholders. By offering a comprehensive analysis of the electoral proceedings throughout Sierra Leone, the EU EOM strives to provide an unbiased perspective.

Before their deployment, the EU EOM observers underwent extensive briefings covering a wide range of topics. These briefings encompassed crucial areas such as election administration, the political landscape, pertinent laws, and the influence of traditional and social media. Additionally, the observers received thorough instructions on logistical and operational matters, with a strong emphasis on prioritizing their safety and security.

In accordance with their commitment to transparency, the EU EOM has outlined its plans for the election observation process. A press conference will be held, and a preliminary statement will be issued within two days after the elections.

Furthermore, a comprehensive final report containing recommendations for future electoral processes will be presented once the entire election process is concluded. These measures aim to uphold the principles of free and transparent elections in Sierra Leone.

To reinforce the credibility and fairness of the elections, additional personnel will be allocated to key areas. As stated in the press release, "Closer to the election day, 40 short-term observers will join the EU EOM to monitor the voting, counting, and tabulation of results. Additionally, a delegation from the European Parliament and approximately 10 locally-recruited short-term observers from the diplomatic missions of EU member states accredited to Sierra Leone will also join the EU EOM to oversee the election day proceedings."

The deployment of both long-term and short-term observers by the EU EOM underscores the organization's dedication to supporting democratic processes and ensuring the will of the people is respected. Through their presence, the EU EOM aims to contribute to a transparent, credible, and inclusive electoral environment in Sierra Leone.
