Tertiary Education Commission Issues Names of Accredited Private Universities in Sierra Leone

On April 25th, 2023, the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) released a list of accredited universities throughout Sierra Leone. The Commission's press release cited the University Act of 2021, which allows for the establishment of private universities in Sierra Leone, provided they are a company limited by guarantee and accredited by the TEC.
TEC expressed concern about the growing number of unregistered and unaccredited private universities, warning that they could adversely affect the quality of higher education in the country.

According to Section 2 (1) of the TEC's Act of 2001 and its Regulations of 2006, anyone seeking to establish a tertiary education institution or offer tertiary education must apply to the Commission for accreditation.

Over the years, TEC has accredited the following private universities: the University of Makeni, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, the University of Management & Technology (UNIMTECH), the United Methodist University (UMU), the University of Lunar (Vol.), and the Central University of Modern Technology (CUMT).

The Commission has cautioned the public against doing business with any private university not mentioned in the above list.
