To link mountain settlements in the Western Region of Freetown, the government of Sierra Leone plans to spend $125 million through the Guma Valley Water Company Master Plan.
This resulted from mountain community members' requests that the project be accelerated to lessen the hardship of collecting water from the stream.
Maraima Sesay, a cookware vendor in Sumaila Town, stated in an interview with A-Z Daily that she finds it challenging to spend a large quantity of money each day only to provide water in her cookware store. She claimed that in order to operate her company, she has pay young people to do the fetching.
She acknowledged, "Considering the difficulty of the road and the considerable distance traversed to and from the stream, much of the profit goes on water," and asked Guma to expedite the plan for them.
Amadu Kalokoh said he must get 50 gallons of water every day before starting school to take care of his home and extra water after school in Kuntoloh, an area in the East of Freetown where residents rely heavily on stream water.
The Master Plan contains four thematic zones, including the Mountain connection, which is in zone two of the pandhich may take as long as 2035, according to Chief Engineer of the Guma Valley Water Corporation Ibrahim Chernor Bah.
Guma was formed on April 14th, 1961, by an Act of Parliament, with the main goal of supplying Greater Freetown citizens with clean, inexpensive water. The Guma Valley Water Company Act No. 6 of 2017 abolished and replaced the 1961 Law that established the Corporation.
